Anyone familiar with the story of Henry VIII, will know how he married his eldest brother’s wife Catherine of Aragon. But not everyone knows that this famous historical tale, of how Henry was able to secure the throne of England started right here in Ludlow. Henry’s eldest brother, Arthur, died of a sweating sickness within the grounds of Ludlow Castle and the tale continues - along charming cobbled back streets, where visitors will find high quality independent shops, eateries and other delights, while taking in stunning renaissance and gothic style architecture.

A short walk away from the castle and square, visitors will discover St Lawrence's Church - where King Arthur’s heart is buried! More recently the church has been able to host events and now, an interactive visitor experience brings bell ringers, resident knights and cherubs to life to capture the imaginations of any teenage phone addict to ensure the family day out goes without a hitch. The English Heritage managed Stokesay Castle is a short car journey away and once home to one of the richest men in England. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Stokesay has been hailed as the ‘best-preserved’ fortified medieval manor house in the country. The Castle is one of the best examples in England of what medieval life was like and allows you to explore over 700 years of history, while offering breath-taking views of the Shropshire Hills.
